“Participants in the national resistance movement resisted thoroughly and seriously throughout all 50 years of the occupation of Latvia. The methods of resistance varied – from armed resistance from the post-war years until the mid-1950s, to non-violent resistance of various kinds, in which a large part of the Latvian people was eventually involved. In the national memory of the Latvian people, which is important for every nation, it is essential to include this resistance movement, which ultimately led us to the restoration of the State of Latvia. If there had been no resistance movement, the national will would have faded, and there would have been no one who wanted to restore Latvia’s independence. Mr Ķeizars and everyone involved in maintaining this museum are doing an extremely important, state-level task. I observe with admiration and highly value how professionally and comprehensively this museum has been set up,” the President of Latvia acknowledged.
Thanks to the national resistance movement, the national will remained alive and Latvia regained its independence
