The latest market report from the Northern European timber producer Stora Enso points to strong demand for domestic wood in Finland, particularly for pulpwood, whose prices remain stable. The company notes that timber trading activity reached a seasonal record high in October, driven by favourable weather conditions and large purchase volumes.
Wood prices and their fluctuations
According to information provided by Stora Enso, wood prices across the various categories remain high, although there are considerable differences depending on the size of the felling site, the distance to the mills, the quality of the wood and the harvesting method. National average prices are a point of reference, but they may not fully reflect local transactions or specific market dynamics.
With Stora Enso's modernised mill in Oulu entering into operation at the beginning of 2025, the company expects demand for wood to increase by a further 1 million cubic metres a year. Stora Enso has also strengthened its procurement capacity by acquiring the wood-processing company Junnikkala. That transaction still requires approval from the Finnish regulatory authorities.
Environmental initiatives
Stora Enso has launched new programmes focused on environmental responsibility, including the management of forest drainage. The company is paying close attention to sustainable forestry practices, managing more than 15,000 harvesting sites each year with particular emphasis on ecological solutions.
Despite market uncertainty, Stora Enso remains determined to expand its purchases of domestic wood, while supporting forest owners in sustainable forest management and commercial activity.
