Researchers have managed to map the hydrothermal system of Yellowstone National Park using a giant flying magnet.
The underground hot water system that "feeds" both Yellowstone's geysers and its other hydrological features has now been mapped in detail, and what was found and learned during the mapping process has helped to fill in previously existing massive gaps in knowledge.
Yellowstone National Park is home to the world's largest hydrothermal system, with approximately 10,000 hydrothermal features, namely geysers, hot springs, and mud pots. These surface features are fed by an underground water network, which is heated by subterranean magma, causing water to rise to the earth's surface. However, researchers have very little understanding of this underground water system.
