Seven environmental activists in Finland fined for halting logging at Yllästunturi

The court ordered the activists to pay Metsähallitus a total of 22,870 euros in damages and a further 4,600 euros in legal costs.

On 15 January, the Lapland District Court in Finland fined seven activists for halting Metsähallitus logging operations in Kolari. Charges against one activist were dropped.

The environmental activists were found guilty of failing to obey the police and of breaching controls at Yllästunturi in January 2023. On several occasions they attempted to obstruct Metsähallitus logging work by blocking access to the site for construction machinery, timber lorries and other traffic.

The activists were ordered to pay Metsähallitus Forestry Oy 22,870 euros in damages and 4,600 euros in legal costs.

Metsähallitus is a Finnish state-owned enterprise operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, whose objectives are approved each year by parliament as part of the state budget. Metsähallitus manages some 12.6 million hectares of state-owned land and water, covering almost a third of Finland's total area. Most of these areas lie in eastern and northern Finland. Metsähallitus is responsible for managing and using these areas in a way that delivers the greatest possible benefit to Finnish society . Based on the previous year's operating results, Metsähallitus will pay the state a dividend of 120 million euros. The total value of Metsähallitus's land and water assets is approximately 4 billion euros.
