Scientists need to be more involved in explaining the impact of climate change

Only 6% of surveyed Latvian residents consider climate change to be the most serious problem in the world. For understandable reasons, the spread of infectious diseases is in first place, followed by the economic situation and armed conflicts. Conversely, the most trusted sources of opinion on climate change issues are scientists, in whom 79% of respondents place their trust. These are the initial findings of a project implemented by Vineta Kleinberga, a doctoral student at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and a researcher at the Faculty of European Studies.

The study, led by Prof. Andris Sprūds, Dean of the Faculty of European Studies, began this year, continuing the research into climate change narratives in Latvia initiated by RSU in 2020, and will run until the end of 2023. However, the current results already allow for a better understanding of the views held by Latvian society regarding the impact of climate change—not only on polar bears in the distant Arctic, but also on our everyday lives and quality of life.
