Back in 2017, scientists at a Swedish university created an energy system that allows solar energy to be captured and stored for up to 18 years, releasing it as heat when needed. Thanks to this new discovery, solar-powered electrical devices have "taken a step closer" to becoming a part of our daily lives.
Now, researchers have succeeded in making the system generate electricity by connecting it to a thermoelectric generator. Although the technological concept, which was developed at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, is still in its early stages, it could pave the way for self-charging electronics that use stored solar energy when required.
