Sawmills are the cornerstone of the Finnish timber industry. They have increased production during the pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the demand for sawn timber, as well as its prices. Thanks to better profit margins, the Finnish timber industry now has the opportunity to invest not only in improving efficiency but also in the production of new products and workplace safety.

Forestry machinery, starting work in the early morning, simultaneously "starts up" a timber production chain that stretches (continues) far, far away from the local sawmill, creating jobs and quality of life in the region and - of course - across the whole country along the way. Sawn timber was Finland's sixth most exported commodity in 2020, with export volumes reaching 1.6 billion euros, corresponding to 3/4 of total sawmill output. Sawmill production and exports are an attractive and profitable pillar of the national economy. In the future, we must certainly think about the export of higher value-added products, in other words, exports based on domestic raw materials.
