Russia's actions regarding gas supplies have made a mockery of the European Union's (EU) goals in the fight against climate change, the leader of Poland's ruling national-conservative Law and Justice party, Jarosław Kaczyński, announced on Wednesday.

Ahead of an EU leaders' summit where the response to rising gas and electricity prices will be discussed, Poland has called on the EU to cancel or delay the implementation of the "Fit for 55" climate change plan.

"After Russia's actions regarding gas, the creators and defenders of this Fit for 55, to put it delicately, have made themselves look ridiculous," Kaczyński told the publication Gazeta Polska.

"Energy prices have hit many EU countries with such force that their citizens will simply not agree to further increases for the sake of some unproven theory," believes Kaczyński.
