“Rīgas meži” to renovate the Cenas tīrelis bog boardwalk; it will be temporarily closed

For the convenience of visitors, SIA “Rīgas meži” will continue to expand and renovate approximately 800 m of the bog boardwalk in the Tīreļi Forest District. The boardwalk will be closed from next week while this work is underway. Residents are invited to use other recreational opportunities offered by “Rīgas meži”, including their various trails.

In 2020, a 565 m section of the boardwalk was renovated starting from its beginning. At that time, the boardwalk's supports were improved and it was widened (from 60 cm to 80 cm). Repairs were also carried out on the observation tower’s stairs and structural elements.

This year, the company will continue the work. The trail will be widened and improved for 784 m up to the start of the loop. In the remaining section of the trail, warped segments will be levelled, damaged boards replaced, bridges restored and new stands for information posters installed.

The boardwalk renovation work is planned from mid-July to mid-September 2023. During this time, the Cenas tīrelis bog boardwalk and the observation towers will be unavailable to visitors for safety reasons.

“Rīgas meži” urges the public to observe safety requirements and movement restrictions during the works. Once the work is complete, an improved boardwalk will be available, which will be easier to navigate and more convenient for passing other visitors.

Cenas tīrelis is located in the Tīreļi Forest District managed by “Rīgas meži”. It is a specially protected area – a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site. The bog is located approximately 30 km from the centre of Riga, in the Babīte parish of the Mārupe municipality. This location and its natural features were formed through the paludification of land; the bog began to form approximately 5,000 years ago. There is a forest massif in its south-western part. The bog contains several lakes, the largest being Lake Skaista. The total length of the Cenas tīrelis boardwalk is about 4 km.

At the same time, “Rīgas meži” invites visitors to make use of the recreational opportunities offered both in the Tīreļi Forest District and elsewhere across the company's territories. For example:

Digitally marked trails are available via the “Rīgas meži” trail account at https://ieej.lv/YQjNc, which lead through all five of the company's forest districts and vary in length and difficulty. Trail routes are regularly updated. To use the “Rīgas meži” digital trails, the “Komoot” app must be installed on your smart device.

One of the trails, located in the vicinity of the historic Christmas Battle sites, is in the Tīreļi Forest District: https://ej.uz/o4es.

While offering the trails created by “Rīgas meži”, the company also invites everyone to create their own trails in “Rīgas meži” and mark them with the hashtag #RadiTakasRīgasMežos!
