To improve the map of Latvian soils, sample digging and collection have begun in many places across Latvia. This will result in a new, much more accurate and internationally valid map, which will delineate what types of soil are present in Latvia and where they can be found.

Valdis Kārkliņš, Professor of Soil Science at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LLU), noted: "We have excavated, and now our task is to describe the reliefs and so on according to a set format, and to take samples for chemical analysis. And we must create a database where the history is combined with the present day."

Information about the soil in Latvia, its composition, what chemical substances it contains, its clay content, and which organic substances are present or no longer present in specific locations, is outdated.
