With the support of the EU Cohesion Fund, plans are in place to tidy up eight protected tree avenues within the state road network in Zemgale, Vidzeme and Kurzeme in the near future. These include the two-kilometre-long Blankenfelde Manor avenue in the Jelgava region by the Veczāmeļi–Blankenfelde–Augstkalne road (V1078), as well as the one-and-a-half-kilometre-long Eleja oak avenue by the Riga–Jelgava–Lithuanian border road (A8). Across all eight avenues, there are more than 1,400 trees aged between 70 and 165 years. The project will be carried out by the Nature Conservation Agency in cooperation with the joint-stock company Latvijas valsts meži, ten municipalities and private landowners. Its total cost is planned at 3.52 million euros, 85 per cent of which is financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund. The tree crowns in the avenues will be shaped and tidied, and surplus and dead branches will be sawn off to extend the lifespan of the trees and preserve the scenic value of the mature trees. If it is found that a tree has died, it will be replaced with a new, large sapling that is at least three metres tall.

The works will take place gradually, with priority given to work in avenues located in residential areas and near major roads, as well as critically urgent work involving dangerous trees. The planting of new trees is scheduled for 2023 as the final stage of the project in the chosen avenues. The goal of the project is to promote the achievement of a favourable conservation status for habitats and species of European Union (EU) importance in 40 specially protected nature territories (Natura 2000 sites), creating suitable conditions for the sustainable existence of 20 EU habitats and at least eight species' habitats, as well as promoting the responsible management of 13 protected avenues.
