Propaganda and agriculture

Concerned about the ever-increasing influence of Protestantism, Pope Gregory XV established a special congregation for the propagation of the Catholic faith on 6 January 1622. This is often considered the first time the concept of 'propaganda' appeared, specifically, when propaganda gained a concrete name. The term was coined using the long-standing agricultural word propagare – to sow further, to increase, to spread.
