Promises to plant trees may hinder the achievement of climate goals

Mistakes made so far may diminish ambitions and the desire to see cities becoming ever greener in the future.

It seems that almost every week somewhere on Earth we hear about a new campaign - let's plant this many trees! The larger the numbers, the more impressive it sounds. Such activities are usually met with great enthusiasm. And... why wouldn't one want to see, feel, and hide under thick tree canopies in cities? The ability of trees to absorb carbon makes them powerful tools in the fight against a changing climate. More than one study has proven that trees reduce air pollution, regulate air temperature, and, to a certain extent, make people want to take a walk.

But! Planting one million trees will not help with global warming because... only a fraction of that million survives, reaches a respectable age, or continues to grow. Such loud and attractive initiatives are... rather simple.

It is not about planting a million trees alone. It is about planting and subsequently caring for a million trees, while also not forgetting to plant them correctly and in the right places.
