In previous years, work in the peat fields began as early as April, but this year not a single kilogram of peat has been harvested to date – so says one of the peat extraction companies in the Daugavpils region. Powerful machinery is sinking and cannot get into the peat bog. In other regions, work in peatlands is already underway, and the Latvian Peat Association also acknowledges that natural conditions are a significant factor determining the intensity of this work and the volume of peat extracted.
