Planning permission granted in Manchester for the world's largest battery system

Energy infrastructure company Carlton Power has received planning permission for what is being called the world's largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The project, which is planned to have a capacity of 1 GW (1040 MW/ 2080 MWh), was approved by Trafford Council in Greater Manchester (Greater Manchester). This large-scale energy storage system, or battery, will be located at Carlton's Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park.

“The £750 million BESS scheme will strengthen the security and resilience of the energy system in the North West of England, as well as support the energy transition and the increase in renewable energy generation in the region,” the company announced.

Construction of the project is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2024, subject to a final investment decision, with commercial operation due to start in the final quarter of 2025. Carlton has announced the start of negotiations with companies regarding the financing, construction, and operation of the Trafford BESS.
