The theme of Peat Days: The peat industry in Latvia — opportunities, trends, and the use of extraction sites after extraction ends.
The Latvian Peat Association and the Latvian National Peat Society are organising Peat Days, which will take place from 5 to 8 September.
At the seminar on 5 September, representatives of the ministries (ZM, KEM, VARAM) will discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the peat industry in the context of climate, nature conservation, restoration and regional development. Representatives of peat-producing countries (Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Ireland) will report on current developments in the industry and share their experience of carrying out restoration. Representatives of various bog-related projects will present their experience and project results.
On 6 September there will be excursions to bogs and peat extraction sites: Rāķa Bog (Vidzeme), Meldziru Bog (Kurzeme), Kņavu Bog (Latgale) and Kaigu Bog (Zemgale).
On 7 and 8 September there will be hikes across Cenas Tīrelis, Ķemeru Tīrelis and Medema Bog, as well as an educational masterclass on bogs and peat at Riga Zoo.
