I believe that the use of timber will only continue to grow. This will not be due to the pandemic, but rather driven by the European Green Deal. Furthermore, the application of timber will become more scientifically intensive and, consequently, more versatile. We are already witnessing a gradual renaissance of timber houses; nowadays, multi-storey buildings and even skyscrapers are being constructed from wood. Chemical processing of timber is developing rapidly—by breaking it down into its basic components, one can obtain a vast array of products that replace the petroleum-based products currently used in daily life. This is a matter of which carbon we choose to consume—fossil-based or biomass. I believe that development in favour of the bioeconomy is inevitable. Of course, the use of oil will not be halted entirely, but it will certainly decline. Globally, 20 times more biomass grows in a given unit of time than the amount of oil pumped out. This means that using timber instead of oil is more than possible.

In recent weeks, both in the Saeima and the Cabinet of Ministers, the thesis has been heard once again: “We must act this way, otherwise there will be penalties, infringement procedures, etc.” Often, such a pseudo-argument completely excludes reasonable disputes, discussions, or alternatives, forcing those responsible to make decisions hastily and not always in the interests of Latvia. Why is that?
