With weather conditions remaining favourable for forest planting and sowing, AS “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) is successfully continuing the forest regeneration work it began in March. Of the 13,930 hectares planned for this year, 11,043 hectares have already been regenerated.

Most of the area regenerated so far has been planted using hand tools – 10,131 hectares. Pines and spruces are mainly planted by hand, and these species have been used on 4,601 and 3,867 hectares of forest respectively. A further 1,180 hectares have been planted with birch using hand tools, and 483 hectares with black alder and other species. Mechanised planting, meanwhile, has covered

310 hectares, with a further 600 hectares sown. Both pine and spruce are planted mechanically, while only pine is sown. The area planted and sown mechanically is growing year on year. The technological solution introduced in 2021 makes forest regeneration more efficient while maintaining a high standard of work.

Zane Driņķe, Chair of the LVM Supervisory Board, stresses: “Although the situation in Latvia's main timber markets remains tense overall and this may also affect next quarter's figures, the company is exceeding its targets for this period in several areas of operation. The favourable weather this spring has allowed forests to be regenerated far more quickly and to run several hundred hectares ahead of the calendar plan. Seedling sales have also considerably exceeded the volume budgeted for the first quarter.”
