On heavy-duty transport without fossil fuels

On 30 May 2022, the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications organised a round-table discussion on the environmentally friendly transition of heavy-duty transport. The discussion included viewpoints from various interest groups regarding heavy-duty transport in general at a time when the sector is moving towards zero emissions. The participants discussed the current situation in fuel markets, EU legislation related to fuels and vehicles, and forms of support that promote the green transition for heavy-duty transport.

In May 2021, the government adopted a resolution on the transition to fossil-free transport, which lists measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by road transport. The goal is to halve transport-related emissions by 2030 compared to 2005 levels and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. Road transport accounts for 95% of domestic transport emissions.

With regard to high-capacity vehicles (heavy-duty transport), the target for 2030 is approximately 4,600 electric buses and lorries and approximately 6,200 gas-powered buses and lorries. Other goals include the establishment of charging infrastructure for heavy-duty goods vehicles and a significant improvement in the coverage of gas refuelling infrastructure. Currently, the majority of kilometres covered by heavy-duty transport are driven using diesel fuel. (...)
