More than a billion people on Earth speak English (for them, it is either their first, native language or their second). Hundreds of millions more use English as a third or fourth means of communication. Some countries in the world have gained an excellent reputation thanks to their citizens' proficiency in learning and speaking English. The Netherlands is one such example, where if an American asks for directions, they will most often be answered in clear, impeccable English.
