Ecological renaissance has begun on an island near Australia. To make it happen, 300,000 rodents were eradicated

The operations mentioned in the headline lasted for half a year and were concluded successfully.

The Lord Howe Island Board has confirmed that the battle against rodents on the island has been brought to a successful conclusion, at a cost of approximately 15 million AUD.

During 2019, approximately 300,000 rats and mice, which are considered invasive species, were eradicated on the island with the help of traps and poisoned bait. Over the years, they caused significant damage to the local flora and fauna. Since no rodents have been spotted on the island in the 15 months since the battle ended, it can be considered that the island is experiencing an ecological renaissance.

As researchers report, mice appeared on Lord Howe Island in 1850, while rats arrived in 1918, as the accounts and legends suggest, after abandoning a sinking ship off the island's coast.
