Last year, following a proposal from a group of Saeima deputies, the Hunting Law was reopened. The reason – the wish of certain proponents of the idea to hunt red deer even where a hunting district contains only agricultural land, rather than forests, bogs and scrubland, as the current regulations require. How do the heads of hunters' organisations assess the situation?

Latvijas Mednieku savienība chairman of the board Juris Buškevics:

"Nothing in the Hunting Law should be changed at present! We are currently in a very good position. At the moment we are permitted to hunt a great deal, and we can develop our hunting operations. I do not wish to tempt fate, but if something is changed, it is doubtful whether we will ever again be able to manage our hunting grounds as we do now.
Every reopening of a law can bring unexpected surprises. It can affect hunting both qualitatively and quantitatively.
On the quantitative side, this could mean restrictions on hunting several species. On the qualitative side, it could mean the destruction of hunting management.
Even from the submission by deputy Putra's group, it is clear that the proposals to reduce the minimum area for deer management could seriously affect our hunting management as such. Collective agreements, which have consolidated hunters and hunting associations, would lose their purpose, and large hunting operations that currently work very efficiently could likewise become fragmented.
I am very much afraid that such a reduction in area could wreck the collegial relations that hunters have built up with farmers. Over these years a good practice had developed whereby hunters support agriculture through their activities, and do so free of charge."
