State media regard the new system as a breakthrough in forest protection, while forestry experts question its transparency and long-term reliability.
According to the report, North Korean foresters have begun operating the country's first national forest pest monitoring and forecasting system, designed to detect, map and predict outbreaks of pests and diseases in the country's forests.
The North Korean publication Rodong Sinmun states that the integrated platform regularly surveys and forecasts the location, spread and damage caused by pests and diseases under centralised command, allowing countermeasures to be taken more quickly and pest control operations to be monitored in near real time.
The project was led by representatives from the Department of Forestry Science at Kim Il Sung University and the Forest Research Institute. According to the report, the head of the university department, Associate Professor Jong Yong Sik, and his colleagues classified monitoring according to regional characteristics and developed monitoring methods for the main forest pests. Field work included surveys of individual species on selected plots of land in order to develop standardised monitoring protocols.
Scientists at the Forestry Research Institute developed what state media call a North Korean-style forecasting methodology, and within a short time built a large database as well as supporting software, Rodong Sinmun reported. Following development, the researchers worked with the Forestry Coordination Bureau of the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection to promote the system's practical implementation.
North Korean media described the system as a scientific and technological foundation for the restoration and protection of forest resources, noting that it would help turn forests into "green, treasure-filled areas and mountains of gold". The newspaper added that the research team would continue to refine the system in order to improve its scientific rigour and operational efficiency.
The report provides no independent verification of the system's capabilities, the scale of its deployment, technical specifications, timescales or funding, nor does it indicate whether the platform integrates remote sensing data, international datasets or external technical partners.
Forestry specialists point out that pest monitoring systems are most effective when they combine standardised field studies, remote sensing data, robust databases and timely decision-support tools. Experts warn that long-term success depends on sustainable practical capacity, consistent data quality and continuous software and hardware maintenance – matters that are not addressed in the North Korean report.
This announcement is the latest state-backed scientific initiative to strengthen natural resource management in North Korea, and it may be of interest to regional observers tracking forest health and pest invasion risks on the Korean peninsula.
