Natural disasters worldwide. Which countries have been affected the most?

In 2022, the USA experienced 26 natural disasters, making it the country most prone to natural disasters in the world. Indonesia was second on this list with 20 natural disasters that same year. Floods were the most common type of natural disaster in 2022.

Types of natural disasters

Many different types of natural disasters occur around the world, including earthquakes, drought, storms, floods, volcanic activity, extreme temperatures, landslides, and wildfires. In total, 387 natural disasters were recorded worldwide in 2022, and 176 of them were floods.

The costs of natural disasters

Due to their destructive nature, natural disasters have a very significant impact on populations and countries. Storms and floods, which tend to occur most frequently, have the greatest negative economic impact on the countries where they occur. In 2022, storms caused more than 130 billion US dollars in damage. The 2011 earthquake that triggered a tsunami in Japan was the most expensive natural disaster of all time, and the damage it caused was estimated at 210 billion US dollars. Furthermore, scientists predict that some natural disasters, such as storms, floods, landslides, and wildfires, will become more frequent and intense in the future, resulting in both human and financial losses.

In 2022, more than 30,000 people died in natural disasters. A heatwave in Europe caused the highest number of casualties, with more than 16,000 deaths.
