Mineral extraction outside Russia is "not a viable answer" to the war in Ukraine

It has become clear that keeping fossil fuel resources in the ground is the key factor that will determine whether we keep global temperatures below pre-industrial levels – or below 1.5 °C, as it is often referred to. A new study suggests this means more than just preventing the extraction of fossil resources in new locations. It means halting existing fossil fuel projects.

This will be unequivocally opposed by oil and gas companies, which plan to spend more than 800 billion euros by 2030 on new oil and gas fields to generate profits that are already at record levels.

As Greg Muttitt (Greg Muttitt) from the International Institute for Sustainable Development points out: “Some current fossil fuel licences and extraction will need to be revoked and phased out. Governments must start addressing how to do this fairly and equitably, and they will need to overcome the resistance of fossil fuel lobbyists.” (...)
