LVM concludes second phase of habitat restoration for EU-priority biotopes and important species

With the start of the bird nesting season, the second phase of extensive restoration and improvement work on European Union (EU) priority habitats and protected species' biotopes has been completed. AS “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) has been carrying out this work across a total area of 778 hectares within 13 EU-protected nature areas (ĪADT) Natura2000 and one micro-reserve. In some areas, the work has already been finished, while elsewhere it will continue until the end of this year.

“Since last April, when the first phase of work concluded, we have been working actively across all project sites. In general, the work has been carried out according to schedule. In many places throughout the year, we encountered difficult situations caused by weather conditions unsuitable for the work. We also continued to address access issues for these sites. For example, to carry out work in the Kreiču marsh, a temporary bridge had to be built to cross a river; a bundle of pipes was laid in the river and covered with logs and branches in two lanes, thus also ensuring water flow. In most of the areas, the positive impact of the work carried out on various environmental assets can already be seen,” says LVM environmental project manager Ieva Rove.
