195 countries have signed a commitment to halt the loss of biodiversity on Earth. At a meeting that formed part of the UN Biodiversity Conference (also known as COP15), participants set about defining the most serious and necessary work for the coming decade.

As the conference is taking place in the Chinese city of Kunming, the declaration has been named after its host location: the Kunming Declaration. The document was drafted during the first part of the conference (its content is similar to the Paris Agreement), but in relation to protecting biodiversity. It is planned that the final agreement will be concluded in the second part of the conference, which is expected next year.
