LOSP: Latvia risks turning into an EU nature reserve

Evaluating the European Commission's announcement regarding recommendations to member states concerning their Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) strategic plans, the Cooperation Council of Agricultural Organisations (LOSP) believes that the recommendations are steering Latvia towards becoming an EU member state that will turn into a nature reserve, where agriculture will be unprofitable and uncompetitive.

Despite Latvia's active involvement and the provision of proposals and opinions, the document has been prepared in a very general manner, without delving into the specific situation of the country, and as a result, the suggested recommendations are incomprehensible and discriminatory among member states, LOSP points out.

The European Commission puts forward the reduction of greenhouse gases generated in agriculture and nitrogen input into agricultural lands as one of the most essential issues. These issues are highlighted as crucial for improving environmental quality, and various solutions are proposed, such as biodiversity, the reduction of plant protection products, greening, and other measures that would improve environmental quality. LOSP agrees that EU member states must take care of the environment, but it must be done in a spirit of solidarity.
