In Sweden, the annual amount of dying wood is around 5%, whereas in Latvia it accounts for at least 20%, which means that biomass is simply rotting in the forest.

This was pointed out to "Dienas Bizness" by Jānis Irbe, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Renewable Energy Federation (LAEF), who emphasised that we should be thinking about a more rational use of forest resources. Data from the State of Europe’s Forests shows that the volume of deadwood in forest stands in Latvia reaches approximately 23.6 cubic metres per hectare (m3/ha) annually, while in Poland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, this volume does not even exceed 10 m3/ha.
