In 2024, freight transport fell across all modes of transport compared with 2023, data from the Central Statistical Bureau show.

International freight transport by road rose by 13.6%
Rail transport carried 11.1 million tonnes of goods, or 28.2% less than in 2023. Domestically, rail transport carried 1.8 million tonnes of goods – 9.9% more. International rail freight transport carried 9.2 million tonnes of goods, a fall of 32.8% in volume. Of this, export transport accounted for 1.7 million tonnes, or 50.3% less; import transport for 6.8 million tonnes, a decrease of 28.1%; and transit freight transport for 0.7 million tonnes, or 12.7% less. A total of 6.9 million tonnes of goods was carried through Latvian ports, which is 35.2% less than in 2023.
Road transport carried 78.2 million tonnes of goods, 3.1% less than in 2023. Domestically, 61.3 million tonnes of goods were carried, 3.1% less than a year earlier — correction: 6.8% less than a year earlier. International freight transport carried 16.9 million tonnes of goods – 13.6% more. Of this, export freight transport accounted for 4.7 million tonnes of goods, 0.5% less. Import freight transport fell by 7.2%, with 3.2 million tonnes of goods carried. Abroad, 9 million tonnes of goods were carried, 34.2% more than in 2023. Of the total volume of goods carried by road, 78.1% was carried as commercial transport. This rose by 2.1%.

The volume of wood chips dispatched from ports rose by 40.5%
In 2024, 36 million tonnes of goods were dispatched from and received at ports, which is 6.8% less than in 2023. Freight turnover at the Port of Riga was 18.1 million tonnes, 3.9% less; at the Port of Ventspils – 8.2 million tonnes, or 21% less; at the Port of Liepaja – 7 million tonnes, or 2.5% less; while at the small ports it was 2.7 million tonnes, 20.7% more.

A total of 26.7 million tonnes of goods was dispatched from ports, which is 1.3% more than in 2023. The volume of containerised goods dispatched rose by 3.9%, timber by 28.8%, and wood chips by 40.5%. Meanwhile, dispatches of coal fell by 68.4%, roll-on/roll-off cargo by 8.2%, oil products by 1.7%, and grain and grain products by 5.2%.
Ports received 9.3 million tonnes of goods, a fall of 24.2% in volume. The volume of containerised goods unloaded fell by 17.6%, ore by 74.2%, coal by 76.6%, and roll-on/roll-off cargo by 8.1%. The volume of oil products, meanwhile, rose by 27.6%.
Riga Airport received and dispatched 18.8 thousand tonnes of goods, or 1.9% less than in 2023.
