“Latvijas valsts meži” restores 61 ha of Kreiči bog

“Several capercaillie leks are known around the edge of Kreiči bog, which further increases the value of this specially protected area. At present, due to overgrowth, living conditions for the capercaillie in the bog were not optimal. The most important food plants for the capercaillie are bilberries and cowberries, and in spring, cottongrass, which require a certain amount of moisture and light. If these conditions are lacking, the capercaillie's vital food source is not available in sufficient quantities. It should be emphasised that overly dense forest stands reduce the visibility of the capercaillie's territory – to protect themselves from natural predators, it is very important for the capercaillie to be able to survey the area,” explains ornithologist and LVM Senior Environmental Expert Uģis Bergmanis.
