Latvians outside Latvia have a long tradition of political manifestation – the political protest demonstrations held by 'trimdas letiņi' (exile Latvians), as they call themselves, at embassies in various countries worldwide since the end of the Second World War have been a major contribution to Latvia's struggle for independence, which led to the Awakening and the restoration of an independent Latvian state.

And now, with Russia having launched a full-scale military aggression in Ukraine on 24 February, Latvians around the world cannot just watch quietly and stand aside; they are protesting against the horrors of war in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin's planned new redistribution of global influence. Latvians are not only protesting with petitions and open letters to various institutions; they are coming together, shoulder to shoulder, to join the societies of their host countries and say a loud NO! Protest actions, which began in the first days of the war with slogans such as Слава Україні! Героям слава! I stand with Ukraine! and others, are continuing today and are expected to carry on as long as the last Russian and Belarusian occupiers have left Ukraine.
