Latvian food producers are fully capable of meeting the food product demand of the Latvian population

Latvian food producers and farmers are fully capable of meeting the demand of the Latvian population across all basic food product groups, and are also capable of ensuring the distribution of food products.

Food products are produced in Latvian farms and companies in volumes greater than required for local consumption in Latvia. In sectors such as milk and dairy products, cereals, eggs, beef and beef products, as well as sheep and goat meat, self-sufficiency significantly exceeds 100%, allowing Latvian producers to also export these products. For example, Latvia produces 3.7 times more cereals, 2 times more beef and beef products, and 1.7 times more eggs than it consumes.

The Latvian food production sector proved its ability to supply the Latvian population with the necessary quantity of food products during the COVID-19 pandemic as well, when, unlike in other countries, a wide range of food products remained available in Latvian retail stores without any supply disruptions.

It should be emphasised that the Ministry of Agriculture (ZM) has been strengthening coordination and cooperation with the food production sector since 2020, in response to the potential negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on various sectors of the economy, which resulted in the prompt development and timely implementation of the support mechanisms necessary for farmers at that time.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in response to a call from the ZM, Latvian food producers expressed their readiness to send dozens of tonnes of food products to Ukraine. Several shipments have already been sent to Ukraine, i.e., several dozen tonnes of food produced in Latvia.
