Employment and unemployment in the regions
Regional disparities in unemployment rates in Latvia are moderate when compared to other OECD countries. While 9.4% of the labour force in Latgale was unemployed in 2021, the corresponding figure for the Pierīga region was 6.5%.
Meanwhile, the difference in employment rates between the regions with the highest (Riga) and lowest (Latgale) employment levels reached 8 percentage points in 2021.

Dependency and the share of older people
It is expected that the share of older people in Latvia will increase in all regions over the next two decades. The old-age dependency ratio in most Latvian regions is also higher than the OECD average (30.4%), ranging from 35.6% in Latgale to 28.6% in Pierīga.

Urban population
Between 2010 and 2021, the population decreased in all Latvian cities. The average annual change in the number of residents ranged from -2.0% in Daugavpils to -0.5% in Riga.
