“Laflora” publishes its first sustainability report and joins the Peat Industry Sustainability Memorandum

The peat extraction and processing company “Laflora” has published its first Sustainability Report, which summarises the company’s 2025 performance in environmental, social, and governance areas. At the same time, the company has joined the Peat Industry Sustainability Memorandum, demonstrating its commitment to working with the sector to implement long-term goals for responsible resource use and sustainable industrial development.

“Laflora” Sustainability Report

The sustainability report has been prepared in accordance with the structure of the voluntary sustainability reporting standard for small and medium-sized enterprises (VSME), while also partially taking into account the requirements of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). It is the first time the company has systematically compiled information on its key environmental, social, and governance aspects and 2025 sustainability performance indicators in one place.

Company impact measured in one place for the first time

In the report, “Laflora” also publishes the company's GHG emission calculations. In 2025, the company's direct, or Scope 1, emissions from fuel use amounted to 3,767.5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent; indirect Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity totalled 125.2 tonnes; and emissions from land management were approximately 6.98 thousand tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

At the same time, the company continues to invest in science and the development of new solutions. In 2025, “Laflora” invested 124,243 euros, or 0.37% of its turnover, in research and innovation. Research focuses include the sustainable use of peat resources and bog management, the development of new environmentally friendly products, the reduction of GHG emissions, and the use of renewable energy sources. The company's approach is based on the principle that science and production must develop in close connection, with research results also being implemented in practical operations.

Sabīna Alta, Development Director at SIA “Laflora”: “For us, the first sustainability report is more than just a summary of what has been achieved. It is a benchmark for future decisions – for the first time, we are systematically gathering our impact, data, and goals in one place. Sustainability must be measurable and integrated into the company’s development – from emissions and resource management to employee safety, research, new technologies, and products, as well as the future life cycle of our territories.”

Agnese Alksne-Bensone, Head of SIA “Sustainability Partners” and developer of the “Laflora” sustainability report: “The first sustainability report allows both the company and its partners to see in one place not only what has already been done, but also the areas where “Laflora” plans to continue strengthening its sustainability practice and implementing its corporate transformation plans. During the report preparation process, we systematically collected data on key sustainability aspects and linked the company's objectives to measurable indicators, which will enable progress and results to be assessed in the future.”

From extraction area to the next land-use cycle

One of the most significant long-term directions defined in the report is the future use of peat extraction areas. “Laflora” has set a goal to gradually reclaim 1,989.985 hectares of its peat extraction sites by 2074, restoring ecosystem functions, reducing GHG emissions, and ensuring diverse future uses for these areas.

By implementing the reclamation measures outlined in the report, it is calculated that the sequestration of 64,540 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent is possible between 2026 and 2074. Meanwhile, by 2030, it is planned to reclaim 339 hectares, combining various solutions for the future use of the sites, including wind energy, green industrial zone development, paludiculture, agrivoltaics, and wetland restoration.

A shared industry commitment

With the publication of its first sustainability report, “Laflora” is also joining the Peat Industry Sustainability Memorandum, aligning the company's individual sustainability goals with the sector's collective shift towards responsible resource management and long-term development.

Uldis Ameriks, Chairman of the Board of “Laflora”: “Sustainability and resilience are closely linked. Latvian peat is an important local resource, and it is our responsibility to use it wisely – by creating ever-higher added value while also thinking about the future of the territories and the long-term development of the company. Joining the Peat Industry Sustainability Memorandum is a joint commitment to strengthen both the sustainability and long-term resilience of the industry.”

The sustainability report also covers issues regarding energy and resource use, biodiversity, the work environment and safety, employee development, corporate governance, and other material impact areas. “Laflora” has also conducted an assessment of its economic activities in the context of the EU Taxonomy, paying particular attention to climate change mitigation, the circular economy, and biodiversity protection.
