(...) Reflecting on the 2024 season, U. Ameriks says it was nothing short of a miracle. Almost a third more peat was extracted than in the previous year. In figures, the total was 959 thousand cubic metres in 2024 against 726 thousand cubic metres in 2023. That works out at an increase of 32%.
Offering a rational explanation for the achievement, U. Ameriks points to the mobilisation of the workforce and the investment made each year in technical equipment. Noting that peat extraction is also significantly affected by the weather, the company's head describes the torrential rains experienced at the end of July and the beginning of August last summer, whose catastrophic volume was recorded in figures at the Kalnciems meteorological observation station. The Drabiņu bog turned into a lake at the time. Thanks to the efforts of the staff, however, the rainwater was channelled into the Lielupe, and by the end of August peat extraction had resumed at the Drabiņu bog. (...)
