In Italy, many things are being restricted, from the English language to raves, synthetic meat, and ChatGPT. The latest target is climate protesters. On 11 April, the Italian government announced plans to introduce heavy fines for those who damage monuments or cultural sites.

The sanctions are ostensibly aimed at activists who have made headlines in recent weeks for public stunts related to climate issues.

Why are fines being increased in Italy?

At the beginning of April, members of the climate activist organisation Last Generation dyed the water of Rome's La Barcaccia fountain black to draw attention to water supply issues in the country.
