The Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFLA) has sent an invitation to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) to prepare and submit a project to receive co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERAF) in order to improve the environmental monitoring system. EUR 9.2 million from ERAF funding is available for this purpose.
The aim of the investment is to provide the public and institutions with timely, high-quality, and comprehensive information on changes in the state of the environment by developing the operation of national environmental monitoring and control systems and implementing systematic, regular, and targeted observations and measurements of the state of the environment.
It is envisaged that in implementing the project, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre will engage the State Environmental Service (VVD) as a cooperation partner, which will assist in ensuring measurements of atmospheric air radioactivity, including the modernisation of the radiation monitoring station system.
Within the framework of the programme, it is planned to achieve the following results by 31 December 2029: air pollution monitoring systems installed in two air quality assessment and management zones, investments made in new or modernised disaster monitoring, preparedness, warning and response systems regarding natural disasters, and climate and environmental monitoring provided; that is, investments have been made in 58 locations within the framework of the projects to establish new or modernise existing monitoring sites, reaching a total of 242 sites.
