The total area used for solid waste disposal in Russia has reached the size of Greece, stated Svetlana Radionova, head of the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources, in an interview. Landfills for solid municipal waste in Russia cover 348 thousand hectares, which is comparable to the size of Hong Kong or one and a half Luxembourgs. If all types of solid waste were included, the area used for disposal would be equivalent to Greece.
The neighbouring country's environmental service concluded that the volume of solid waste in the country increased by 10-12% last year. S. Radionova commented on the statement by the Russian Deputy Prime Minister that "about 90% of waste is still being disposed of in landfills, not recycled, and this figure has not changed since the beginning of the waste reform", explaining that there is a lack of capacity to implement the reforms, and adding that waste sorting in Russia is operating inefficiently due to the aforementioned lack of capacity, which she has confirmed herself while travelling extensively throughout the country.
