For the new lynx hunting season, it is planned to issue individual hunting permits instead of the previous quota system for hunted animals. This means that lynx may only be hunted if the animal is emaciated, injured, or dangerous to the public, and if there are no other alternatives. Each lynx hunting application will be reviewed by specialists from the State Forest Service (VMD).

Currently, the lynx is still on the list of game animals in Latvia, but in this season, which begins in December, lynx hunting is planned to be permitted only under the exceptions included in the European Union Habitats Directive, noted Valters Lūsis, Head of the Hunting Division at VMD.
