Emphasising the use of more nature-friendly machinery in forestry operations, SIA “Rīgas meži” is for the first time conducting logging work in its Jugla forest district as part of a pilot project using compact machinery. The work will take place in a pine stand near Ulbroka and is scheduled to begin this week.
Compared to the usual approach, work carried out with smaller machinery is more nature-friendly because it is smaller, lighter and more manoeuvrable. Consequently, this also ensures better gradual (proportional) development of the forest stand. Furthermore, the compact machinery leaves almost no ruts, and after a few months, it is practically impossible to see where work has been done.
Objectives of the work in the pine stand near Ulbroka:
– to improve the quality of the forest and growing conditions for the remaining trees, as well as to promote forest regeneration. Therefore, the primary focus will be on felling damaged, poor-quality, suppressed and diseased trees,
– to create an attractive forest landscape, promote recreational opportunities for residents and preserve biodiversity.
Type of work: thinning.
Scheduled time for work: March 2024.
Area: approx. 9 ha (near Ulbroka, Ropaži municipality, in the Ķivuļi beat of the Jugla forest district, parts of compartments 261 and 239).
Attention: During the work, please be cautious and do not approach the machinery!
This forest maintenance near Ulbroka is a continuation of work carried out previously – at the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. It was conducted in accordance with the company’s “Forest Management Plan”, the landscape design plan developed for this forest stand, and the functional zoning of the municipal territorial plan.
Regarding logging work at “Rīgas meži”
When carrying out logging, “Rīgas meži” is paying increasing attention to ensuring that the work is performed as nature-friendly and efficiently as possible.
For example, at the beginning of the year, work with this compact machinery was already carried out in the “Rīgas meži” Tīreļi forest district, near Jaunolaine. The results indicate that it was more nature-friendly, more efficient and also more advantageous from an economic perspective.
Meanwhile, in “Mežaparks”, managed by “Rīgas meži”, where logging is currently taking place, branches and timber are being moved from the forest to the side of the paths using gentler compact machinery – the “Iron Horse”.
