“For safety reasons, a dozen trees that are dead or dangerously leaning have been marked for felling,” explains Guntars Mozuļčiks, an arborist at SIA “LABIE KOKI eksperti”. “Approximately fifty trees require an in-depth assessment. It is possible that the crown of some trees can be reduced or the branches reinforced, for example by connecting them together. This would preserve the tree for several more years. In addition, there are approximately one thousand trees in the park that require minor maintenance. Basically, this involves pruning one or more dead branches.”

 

“Maples are the most dangerous trees in Lielie kapi,” continues G. Mozuļčiks. “This was also confirmed by the recent storm, which mercilessly snapped precisely these species of trees and their branches.”

 

 

Initial data indicate that the storm on 8 and 9 October knocked down or snapped 25 trees or their branches in Lielie kapi. Two of these trees had already been identified as dangerous by experts. For safety reasons, the area has been temporarily closed to visitors since Sunday, 8 October. Furthermore, trees and their broken branches continue to break and fall to the ground. (...)
