On 27 June, the European Parliament's Environment Committee voted on the amended version of the Nature Restoration Law. The piece of legislation, which aims to halt the decline in biodiversity by restoring Europe's degraded land and marine areas, has become a target of constant criticism from conservative parties.

Following a long series of amendments, the text of the law as a whole received 44 votes in favour and 44 against, meaning it did not receive the simple majority required to progress through a single vote. The announcement of the result sparked applause and shouting in the chamber, which vividly reflected the sharp ideological divide caused by this law.

This is the first time the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) has rejected a component of the European Green Deal. Previously, two associated committees (Agriculture (AGRI) and Fisheries (PECH)) had already rejected it.

As a result, the legislation in its original form (as proposed by the European Commission) will be sent for a vote in the plenary session, with a recommendation for it to be rejected in its entirety.
