According to the German government's so-called "Easter Package", which aims to use agricultural raw materials for energy production in response to the war in Ukraine, biomass will be used to meet exceptionally high energy demand.

The "Easter Package" on the expansion of renewable energy sources states that to promote the use of biomass, "greater attention will be paid to highly flexible peak-load power plants".

The new measures were presented on 6 April by the Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck.

With amendments to the Renewable Energy Sources Act, known as the EEG, the German government wants to ensure the use of bioenergy in situations where energy demand is particularly high, so that it can supplement base supplies from less flexible energy sources in the short term.

The package states that "bioenergy should increasingly exploit its strengths as a storable energy source that serves the system". However, the difficulties in storing solar and wind energy are a significant obstacle to the further development of renewable energy sources.

Although this means that biomass will have an important place in the future to compensate for the shortcomings of other energy sources, more targeted use is likely also intended to control the total amount of biomass burned.
