It was previously reported that 1983 was the last time the Formosan clouded leopard was observed (encountered), and in 2013 the big cat was declared extinct.

However, several people in the region have reported that the leopard has been seen again! Residents of a small village near Taitung City report that they saw the big cat in 2018. According to these accounts, the leopard was seen hunting, and during the hunt, it caught a mountain goat.

Other 'spotters' of the big cat report that it ran out onto the road in front of a scooter, climbed a tree, and disappeared!
