Latvia ranks sixth in Europe for certified organic land area

Latvia currently ranks sixth in Europe in terms of certified organic land area, the Ministry of Agriculture (ZM) explained to the LETA agency in response to criticisms from the Latvian Organic Agriculture Association (LBLA) regarding the development of the organic sector in Latvia.

"The statements circulated regarding the development of the organic sector in Latvia are not accurate," commented representatives of the ZM.

The Ministry explained that, thanks to the policy implemented by the ZM and support from the European Union (EU), Latvia already ranks sixth in the EU in terms of certified organic land area. The ZM also reported that the area of certified organic agricultural land covered 290,000 hectares, or approximately 14% of the total agricultural land area in the country, as of 1 January 2020. Since 2019, the certified organic area has increased by 2.2%, and compared to 2014, it has increased by 30%.
