20 protected habitats and habitats for several species to be restored in over 40 natural areas

The Nature Conservation Agency (hereinafter – the Agency), together with cooperation partners in state, municipal and private institutions, plans over the coming years to restore protected habitats and create suitable conditions for the sustainable existence of species habitats in more than 40 specially protected nature areas throughout Latvia.

These activities are planned within the European Union Cohesion Fund project “Implementation of management measures in specially protected nature areas and micro-reserves to improve the conservation status of habitats and species”, which the Agency will implement until the end of 2023 together with cooperation partners from A/S “Latvijas valsts meži”, VSIA “Latvijas Valsts ceļi”, more than 10 municipalities and private landowners.

“Nature conservation requires systematic and conscious human involvement to preserve specific habitats and species, the living environment of which has for centuries depended on human economic activity,” states the Director General of the Agency, Andrejs Svilāns, and adds that at the same time, there are many habitats that have been negatively affected by human economic activities.
