Recommendation to grow common beech in Latvia

The species has several advantages – it is shade-tolerant and can grow under the dense canopies of broadleaved trees. It also has a high standing volume; in mature common beech stands, this can reach as much as 600 m3 per hectare, or around 400 m3/ha at 30 years of age, provided that growth and climatic conditions are good and the trees do not suffer from frost.

Meanwhile, the most common defects found in these trees are cracks, forks, dead branches in the crown and epicormic shoots.

In light of projected climate change, growing conditions for common beech in Latvia will approach the optimum in the future, and it could successfully grow and regenerate not only on the western coast of Kurzeme but across approximately half of Latvia's territory.
