Forests in Latvia are managed sustainably

Although forest managers do not always manage to implement the latest findings in forest science into their daily work quickly, forests in Latvia are managed sustainably, according to Mārtiņš Līdums, director of the Forest Research Station.

He emphasised that not all forest managers in Latvia are currently using the latest findings from forest science. Forest management is a long-term process without immediate returns, and not every forest manager can afford to invest their time and resources in innovation.

According to him, the sector's largest players are the first to introduce innovations. If the improvements they provide for forest management can be assessed, they start to be used by a wider range of forest owners. This has been the case with, for example, intensively tended (thinned) young stands, soil preparation in mounds with an excavator, or fresh stump treatment against root rot infection.
