Latvia also has its own unique hemp seed variety, 'Adzelvieši', which is registered in the European Commission's register.
'Latvian hemp is highly unique; no other country in Europe has such local varieties, and this must be very, very much appreciated,' emphasised Arta Kronberga, lead researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics.
It was selectively bred by the people – farmers themselves selected the best seed material with excellent flavour characteristics.
Hemp is a demanding crop, so thorough research was previously carried out to understand how best to grow it. We can now say that this variety has fully adapted to cultivation in the Latvian climate.
